DICOM vs DCM: What Is the Difference?
What is the .dcm file a hospital sent you? DICOM is a medical imaging standard, while DCM is usually a filename extension. Knowing the difference helps you avoid treating a screenshot as an original study and keep the complete files a doctor needs.
The short answer
DICOM = the standard; .dcm = a common extension. DICOM describes how images and study information are stored and exchanged. A DICOM object may be named image.dcm, may use another extension, or may have no extension. Validate the file contents and the complete study rather than relying on the name.
Three steps to save a study
- Use the hospital portal's “original images”, “DICOM”, or “export” option when it is available.
- Extract the download and import the whole folder into a DICOM viewer, not just one image.
- Keep the report, study date, and export notes together. Share them only with a recipient who is authorized to view the patient record.
Submit only links you are authorized to use. What a hospital platform can provide varies; the actual detection and task result determine the delivered files.
Common mistakes
Renaming a JPG to .dcm
Changing the suffix does not create DICOM metadata or restore a sequence, bit depth, or study information. A screenshot is useful for discussion but is not a complete archive.
Keeping only one DCM file
CT and MRI studies commonly contain multiple series and instances. One file opening successfully does not prove that the study is complete.
Confusing a format with a diagnosis
DICOM is a data format, not a medical conclusion. A qualified clinician should interpret the images and provide medical advice.
FAQ
Are DICOM and DCM the same thing?
No. DICOM is the standard and .dcm is a common extension. The extension alone cannot prove validity.
Can a phone open a DCM file?
Some apps can preview files, but a computer or hospital viewer is usually better for full series and measurements.
What if the cloud film is view-only?
Check the hospital page for an export or download control first. If none is visible, read what to do when cloud images are view-only and submit an authorized link for compatibility checking.
