How to open a DCM file

影览知微 (影览) is a free online DCM / DICOM medical imaging viewer, used as a web app without downloading or installing dedicated viewer software. For local files, open the viewer home. For a hospital link or QR code, first use Medical Image Download to identify and retrieve available files; retrieval may incur a charge at the quote shown before submission.

Steps

  1. Keep the complete study archive. 影览知微 reads local ZIPs directly; extract the whole archive when your chosen viewer requires it instead of selecting a single image.
  2. Open the folder or study in a DICOM-capable viewer. Menu names differ between applications.
  3. Keep the report, folder structure, and task details together so a doctor can assess completeness.
  4. Do not upload real DICOM files, QR codes, or reports to public websites. Share them only with an appropriate recipient.

Please submit only records you are authorized to retrieve. The service does not provide medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DCM and DICOM?

DICOM is the medical imaging standard. .dcm is a common file extension, but some DICOM files use different extensions.

Can a phone open DCM files?

Some mobile apps can preview them, but a computer or hospital viewer is usually better for complete studies.

Open DICOM online or use desktop software

Open 影览知微, the free online DICOM viewer, and choose a downloaded .dcm file, complete folder or imaging ZIP to browse CT/MRI slices, adjust window settings, zoom and pan. No installation is required, and the browser parses images on your device without uploading them to this service. Series meeting the spatial and pixel requirements support MPR and 3D volume rendering; not every study supports 3D.

The viewer cannot retrieve files from a hospital link or provide a medical diagnosis. Encoding, browser support, device memory and series conditions limit loading and display; compatible desktop software is another option for large studies. Hospital imaging retrieval requires submitting the authorized share and necessary verification details to the download service, which differs from local viewing.

Windows users can review the viewer on the MicroDicom website . The Weasis documentation also provides installation and usage guidance. Follow the chosen software's official instructions, then import the study folder.

MicroDicom and Weasis are independent software resources. Check each publisher's licensing, supported systems, and intended use. Viewing your images is not a medical diagnosis.

3D reconstruction, segmentation and export

Import a complete CT or MR (MRI) DICOM series, select it and check whether a volume can be built before opening MPR or the 3D workspace. These features need suitable spatial information, pixel encoding and device resources; not every study supports 3D.

Advanced viewer features and requirements
FeatureWorkflow and requirements
MPR multiplanar reconstructionView axial, coronal and sagittal planes from an eligible tomographic series. A single X-ray projection, localizer or screenshot cannot restore internal slices.
3D volume, surface and overlay renderingVolume rendering displays intensity and opacity; surface rendering requires structure labels. Overlay combines images and structures. Select a mode in Display, and lower quality when device resources are limited.
Structure extraction and manual segmentationUse an intensity range under Separation, or create a structure and edit it with a brush in MPR. Bone candidates require verified CT HU. Dense candidates may include metal; a threshold does not identify every organ.
NRRD, DICOM SEG and STL exportUse More to save labels or export a model for the current source. NRRD stores labels. DICOM SEG requires suitable original-grid references and structure information and may retain patient identity. STL requires a successfully generated current surface model; it is not an original CT/MR study archive.
Local model segmentation handoffExport model input, run the CLI on a computer with a prepared environment and model, then import its result. The webpage does not run an organ model directly. These local tools need separate setup; the viewer's no-install workflow does not mean model execution requires no installation.

Display interpolation does not recover missing original slices. A source with interpolated gaps may be viewable but ineligible for extraction or export requiring the complete original grid. Keep original files; derived outputs do not replace source imaging or a medical diagnosis.

Online viewing and reconstruction questions

Do I need to download software to view CT, MR or X-ray images online?

For local DCM/DICOM files, 影览知微 needs no dedicated viewer download or installation. CT, MR/MRI and X-ray compatibility depends on the actual encoding and browser. Hospital links must first be processed on the download page.

Can a single X-ray produce a true internal 3D volume?

No. An X-ray projection, localizer or screenshot lacks consecutive slices. MPR and volume rendering require a tomographic series meeting spatial and pixel conditions; they cannot recover true internal structures from one projection.

Is viewer 3D reconstruction the same as reconstructed DICOM delivery?

They are different operations. Viewer reconstruction displays or derives structures from existing images. Reconstructed DICOM delivery organizes hospital-platform pixels and metadata into files. Check the task result for provenance and completeness.

Common viewing problems
Symptom Next step
The system asks for an app Open a DICOM viewer and import the folder. A missing file association does not mean the file is damaged.
Only one image appears Import the complete study and inspect the series list instead of opening a single instance.
The archive will not extract Check download completion and free disk space; collect the file again if needed.
Unsupported format or encoding Record the error and follow the viewer's update instructions or try a compatible viewer. Preserve the original files.

One multi-frame DICOM file can contain many images, so file count alone does not prove completeness. Renaming a JPEG to .dcm does not make it source DICOM.
